QSO Logbook

QSO Logbook Closed Beta

About Us

What would a radio social media website look like? This is the question that motivated the creation of QSO Logbook. While we are still working out the answer to that question, there are a few features that seem obvious:

  • A great-looking profile where folks can provide their preferred name and location, show their call signs and post pictures.
  • An easy way to search for other radio operators by name, call sign, location, or almost anything that appears within their license and/or profile.
  • A way to post public information, for example a blog.
  • A way to log contacts and share QSO logs with others.
  • A way to create, view, and share QSL cards both printed and digital.

Our vision is ambitious, and we are working on implementing the above ideas and more. As this website is in beta, we continue to build, debug, and implement these and more features.

This project is a way for us to learn and experiment with cloud technologies (e.g. Amplify, Cognito, DynamoDB), OpenSearch, as well as React and Material-UI. We are also using this project as a way to learn more about amateur radio and build a tool that we intend to use ourselves.

Dana McLaird is a Systems Engineer and brings a systems design perspective to QSO Logbook. Dana has also taken interest in project management and is currently project managing QSO Logbook development. Dana has her technician's amateur radio license and is studying for the general amateur radio license.

Theresa McLaird is a software engineer with an amateur interest in music. Theresa has spent her career in web development as a front-end engineer and is the web site architect for QSO Logbook. Theresa has her extra amateur radio license.

Nathan Syfrig is a computer scientist/software engineer. Nathan has spent a long career working on databases, applications, and support tools, both pre and post web. Lately, he has been concentrating on web middleware and back end development and support, with an emphasis on contributing to good software design and quality. His role at QSO Logbook is that of back-end engineer and database expert. And as might be expected, he has become naturally interested in amateur radio and is studying for at least his technician amateur radio license to join the community. And with decades of training and performing as a musician from classical to most everything in between, Nathan will fit right in to the sizable amateur radio population with these attributes.
